Explore the Boney Shore with a Parks Canada guide to see the most visible remains of 16th century Basque whaling at Red Bay: the whale bones! Walk along the beautiful harbour with a view of Saddle Island. Let these ancient bones cast new light on the present-day population of North Atlantic right whales.

Guided Walk and Tour: (1h) 

With the earliest and best preserved artifacts of their kind, take a short ferry ride to join a Parks Canada guide to visit the archaeological sites on Saddle Island. Walk around the breath-taking island to hear first-hand experiences of finding some of Red Bay’s most precious artifacts, check out where whale oil was processed, and explore the life and times of Labrador’s 16th-century Basque whalers.

Stories, music and food – This program offers new and exciting ways to experience the culture of Labrador’s 16th-century Basque whalers. Take a short ferry ride to Saddle Island and immerse yourself in the stories of Red Bay’s history and Basque culture. Enjoy music with a 16th-century flair and a mouth-watering selection of authentic Basque pintxos (little bites) by a local chef.

Red Bay's Xplorer's Booklet

 

When children arrive at Red Bay National Historic Site, they receive an Xplorers booklet filled with fun activities that will guide their discovery of this special place. At the end of their visit, children receive an official collectable souvenir recognizing them as Parks Canada Xplorers!
