Lock 19 - Scotts Mills

Trent-Severn Waterway National Historic Site

Lock 19 is located at south edge of Peterborough. Boaters will be able to find an ample range of services in this city of 75,000 inhabitants. By mooring below the lock station, boaters can extend the length of the cruising day as there are open river and lake runs all the way to Hastings; a distance of 60.5 km (37.6 miles)

History
Construction of the Scotts Mills lockstation
Constructed: 1837-1843

The 1841 lock at Whitla’s Rapids allowed steamers access from the Otonabee River to Peterborough and this is the only lock left to retain its original masonry. The original surveyor Nicol Hugh Baird worked under Lieutenant-Colonel John By during the construction of the Rideau Canal. Today, Scotts Mills sits in the middle of a vibrant community which is also home to the Trent-Severn Waterway Headquarters.
