Atlantic parks salmon recovery

Wild Atlantic salmon are an iconic Canadian species. Across the Atlantic region, Parks Canada has been dedicated to salmon recovery actions for decades. The continued presence of salmon within Atlantic national parks reflects the commitment to protecting and maintaining the ecological integrity of our treasured places.

Worldwide, wild Atlantic salmon populations have declined dramatically across their range, including the many populations within the waters of Atlantic Canada. National parks in Atlantic Canada are each home to a different population of salmon with a varying species-at-risk status. As a result, five national parks and their partners have teamed up for Atlantic salmon conservation.

Together, Fundy, Cape Breton Highlands, Gros Morne, Kouchibouguac and Terra Nova national parks have the opportunity to study conservation actions across the different populations simultaneously. By collaborating on conservation actions, ecological monitoring and community stewardship at each site, this work will help inform future efforts to prevent populations from becoming further endangered.
