  • National Indigenous Peoples Day

    Time: 09:30 AM - 05:00 PM
Location(s): Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site

Nestled in the Eastern region of Unama’ki (Cape Breton), Louisbourg sits on the ancestral territory of the Mi’kmaq. The Fortress of Louisbourg was one of many settler colonies in North America that was constructed on land that was never surrendered. It is important that we recognize the negative impacts that colonialism had, and continues to have, on Mi’kmaq and the world's Indigenous peoples.

In order for us to move forward with reconciliation, it is important that Mi’kmaq voices are heard and amplified. We encourage visitors to take part in their own decolonization learning journey while visiting Louisbourg and the Mi’kmaw Interpretive Centre is a great place to start!

Learn more about the relationship between the Mi’kmaq and French through L’nu songs and stories, and discover traditional Mi’kmaq craft, dress, and knowledge at the Mi’kmaw Interpretation Centre.
