HMCS Haida National Historic Site

The following information is intended to help visitors better prepare for their visit.

Accessibility and Safety
  • Limited accessibility
    Exploring the ship can be physically challenging, and involves climbing stairs, vertical ladders, narrow cat-walks, and moving through hatches.
  • Decks
    We ask that visitors walk with care as decks are uneven, contain obstacles, and are slippery when wet.
  • Ladders and spaces
    Face all ladders going up and down, and be mindful of low clearances overhead.
  • Mobility Aids
    Please note that wheelchairs, walkers, and strollers are not permitted aboard due to obstacles on decks and narrow passageways.
  • Families with small children
    Parents of young children are encouraged to use a baby carrier and must keep young children close at hand and supervised at all times.
  • Main Deck Accessibility
    While exploring the various decks of the ship can be challenging, visitors who do not wish to climb ladders may still see much of the ship by using one set of stairs installed on board.
  • Footwear
    For the safety of our visitors, closed-toed, active footwear is recommended.
  • Attire
    Pants or shorts are also recommended for visitors who choose to climb ladders.
Dogs and Pets

For the safety of our staff and visitors, and for respect of HMCS Haida as a cultural resource, pets are not permitted to board HMCS Haida. All pets must remain on the grounds of the jetty and must be accompanied, kept on-leash, and under care and control at all times.

Do not leave pets unattended in your vehicle.

Parks Canada appreciates the cooperation of visitors so that we can all safely enjoy our shared spaces.

Service Animals
Licensed service animals are permitted on board.

Heat and Inclement Weather

In the summer months, HMCS Haida can heat up to uncomfortable temperatures. Staff will alert visitors to on-board temperatures and the ship may close in extreme heat situations. Visitors are encouraged to bring water, take frequent breaks in the shade, and wear protective sunscreen.

Parking

Visitors can park free of charge in the parking lot of HMCS Haida National Historic Site. Spaces are limited. Visitors may also access additional parking on City of Hamilton property in the area. Due to limited parking spaces on site, visitors are asked to only use the parking lot for the time they are on site.

Electric Vehicles
Four parking spaces with electric charging stations are available on a first come, first served basis.

Please note: the parking lot is closed and locked at 5 pm during the operating season. Do not leave the site without your vehicle
